Canoeing Equipment
The following is a list of items you will be needing on any extended canoe camping trip taking place during the Spring, Summer, or Fall months in the Northeast.
Those items marked with an * = can be borrowed from the Outing Club as a member
Highly Recommended Items:
- Waterproofed Bag to hold your gear -- preferably a dry bag*, or a backpack* or duffel lined well with plastic bags! (trash bags, with clothes in ziplocks)
- Day Bag -- dry bag* or day pack lined with plastic bag
- Sleeping Bag* (synthetic fiber or down filled bag -- NO COTTON bags!)
- Rain Jacket* and Rain Pants*
- Wool or Fleece WARM Hat
- Fleece or Wool Sweater (WARM)
- T-Shirt (maybe 2 if you are on an extended trip)
- Fleece or Wool Pants (WARM, avoid 100% cotton, i.e. jeans)
- 1 pair Shorts
- Long underwear mid-weight Top AND Bottom (Polypropylene, Thermax, Capilene, etc.)
- 2-3 pair wool socks (non cotton)
- Gloves or Mittens -- wool or fleece (Warm, not cotton)
- Water Shoes (like Tevas or old sneakers, which will stay on your feet if you need to jump out of the canoe)
- Camp Shoes -- 1 pair of sneakers or hiking boots to keep your feet warm and dry
- Small Flashlight or Headlamp* with NEW batteries (and extras)
- Labeled cup, bowl, spoon (NO glass!)
- 2 x 1 qt. water bottles*
- Hat with brim for sun
- Sun Block and Chapstick (with sunscreen)
- Lots of Enthusiasm and Smiles!
Recommended Items:
- Sleeping Pad*
- Lightweight loose-fitting pants that will dry easily (avoid 100% cotton, i.e. jeans)
- Swimsuit
- 1 Bandanna
- 1 small Towel
- Small Pocket Knife
- Compass*
- Sunglasses
- Whistle
- Extra prescription glasses or contact lenses
- Security strap (like Croakies) for sunglasses and glasses
- Small plastic bags, like Ziplocks, to further waterproof important items
- Duct Tape (can wrap some around a water bottle or pencil to bring with you for repairs)
Optional Items:
- Camera with film
- Personal Toiletry Items (toothbrush, baking soda or tooth paste, tampons, contact lens solution, medications (with prescription), hand cream... avoid soap, but if absolutely necessary bring biodegradable soap like Camp Suds or Dr. Bronners)
- Small Roll on or Squeeze tube of Insect Repellent
- Paperback Book or other good Reading Material, Games, Deck of Cards, Stories
- A Journal or Notebook with Pen
- Binoculars
- Fishing Rod (regulations permitting)
- Field Guides
- Crazy Creek Chair (preferably with the WOC logo on the back!)
